Free car GPS tracker in Tunisia: what's the catch?
The short answer
A truly free car GPS tracker does not really exist. Phone apps only work if a phone stays in the car, and cheap imported trackers leave you alone with fitting, the SIM card and an often dated platform. A real service costs money, but the NavUp quote is free and comes within the hour.
There is no such thing as a truly free car GPS tracker that protects your car well. Free phone apps only work if a phone stays in the car, switched on and charged. Cheap imported trackers cost little at first, but you handle the fitting, the SIM card, the setup and the problems on your own. A real tracking service is paid, because it includes hardware, fitting, data, a platform and people who answer. What can be free is the quote: at NavUp, it is free, with no commitment, and comes within the hour.
Free or cheap options are not useless, but you should know what you get. Here is an honest look.
Can a free phone app track my car?
Yes, in a limited way. Many free apps share a phone’s location with family members, and some are designed for tracking a car. They work well for knowing where a person is.
For a car, they have clear limits:
- The phone has to stay in the car, switched on, charged and connected.
- A thief who finds the phone simply turns it off.
- There is no movement alert when the ignition is off, and no engine cut-off.
- The app shows where the phone is, not where the car is.
An old phone hidden in the glovebox can help in a pinch. It is not real protection, and it needs charging all the time.
What about cheap trackers bought online?
Small imported trackers sold online or at the market are tempting. The box looks the same as a professional one, and the price on the label is low. The catch comes after you open it.
No fitting. Most of these trackers need to be wired to the car’s battery and ignition. Done badly, it can drain the battery, cause electrical faults or affect your warranty. Many people end up paying someone to fit it anyway, or leave it loose in the car, where it is easy to find.
A SIM card to manage. You have to buy a SIM, activate data, keep it topped up and check it has not expired. If the credit runs out, the tracker goes silent, often right when you need it.
A dated or foreign platform. The tracker usually comes with a generic app or website run from abroad. It is often only in English or Chinese, hard to use on a phone, and you have no idea who sees your data or how long the service will last.
No support. When the tracker stops reporting, there is no one to call. No technician, no warranty you can use locally, no one who speaks Derja or French.
The result is often a tracker that works for a few weeks, then quietly stops. By the time you notice, it may be too late.
What does a real tracking service include?
A proper GPS service covers everything between the satellite and your phone, so you do not have to think about it. With NavUp, that means:
- A tracker suited to your vehicle, hidden behind the dashboard or under the seat.
- Fitting at your door by a technician, in all 24 governorates, without cutting original wiring.
- The SIM card and mobile data, included, with nothing to top up.
- The NavUp tracking platform on the web and the phone app, in English, French and Arabic.
- Live location about every 10 seconds, alerts and trip history.
- With the Anti-theft plan, remote engine cut-off below 20 km/h and an 8-hour backup battery.
- A local team that answers 7 days a week, and a warranty if the tracker fails.
This has a cost, because each part has a cost. What you pay for is a tracker that keeps working, and someone to call when you need help.
Is anything really free with NavUp?
Yes, a few things, and we prefer to be clear about which ones.
The quote is free and has no commitment. You tell us the vehicle, how many trackers you need and your governorate, and we call you back within the hour with a clear quote.
The app is included with every tracker, for as many users as you like, at no extra cost. Travel to your place is included in the quote, wherever you are in Tunisia.
The tracking service itself is not free. We will never pretend otherwise. The price depends on the vehicle, the plan and the options, which is why we give a quote rather than a single figure. Our guide on GPS tracker prices explains what changes the quote.
How do I choose without overpaying?
Start from what you actually need. If you just want to know where the family car is, the Tracking plan is enough. If the car sleeps on the street or is in demand with thieves, the Anti-theft plan with engine cut-off makes more sense. Our anti-theft GPS page helps you decide.
Then ask a few simple questions of any provider:
- Who fits the tracker, and does it affect my warranty?
- Is the SIM card included, or do I manage it?
- Can I try the platform and the app before I decide?
- Who do I call if it stops working?
If the answers are vague, the low price is probably hiding the cost somewhere else. You will find more answers in our FAQ, or you can ask for your free quote directly.
