How to protect your car from theft in Tunisia
The short answer
Combine good parking habits, a visible mechanical lock and a hidden GPS tracker with movement alerts and remote engine cut-off. If the car is stolen, call the police on 197, share its live location with them and never try to recover it yourself.
The best protection against car theft in Tunisia is a mix of three layers: habits that make your car a less tempting target, a mechanical lock that slows a thief down, and a hidden GPS tracker that tells you the moment the car moves. A tracker with remote engine cut-off lets you stop the car once it is going slower than 20 km/h. If your car is stolen anyway, call the police on 197, share its live location with them and let them handle it.
None of these layers is perfect alone. Together, they make your car much harder to steal and much easier to get back.
Which cars are most at risk?
Thieves go for what is easy to sell, whole or in parts. Popular models such as the Golf, Clio, Polo, 208 and Kia ranges are in demand because their parts are always needed.
Risk also depends on where the car sleeps. A car parked on the street every night, in the same spot, is more exposed than one in a closed garage. Cars bought on credit are a special worry, because you keep paying even if the car is gone.
What parking habits make a real difference?
The simple things work, and they cost nothing.
- Park in a lit, busy street or a guarded car park when you can.
- In a residence, use the closed garage if there is one, even if it is less convenient.
- Never leave the keys in the car, even for a minute outside a shop.
- Keep the spare key at home, not in the glovebox.
- Don’t leave bags, phones or papers in sight. A broken window often comes first.
- Keep your registration documents with you, not in the car.
Are steering wheel and pedal locks worth it?
Yes, as a deterrent. A steering wheel lock or pedal lock is visible from outside. A thief looking at a row of cars will often skip the one that takes extra minutes and tools.
They won’t stop a determined thief, and they do nothing once the car is gone. That is where a tracker comes in.
How does a GPS tracker help against theft?
A good anti-theft tracker does three things.
It warns you as soon as the car moves
If the car moves or starts while the ignition is off, you get a notification on your phone straight away. At 3am, that is the difference between finding out in the morning and finding out in seconds.
It lets you cut the engine remotely
With an engine cut-off, you press a button in the app and the engine stops. For safety, the command only acts when the car is going slower than 20 km/h. If the car is driving fast, the tracker waits for it to slow down. A car that will not restart is very hard to take far.
It keeps working if someone pulls it out
A tracker is hidden behind the dashboard, not plugged into an obvious port. If a thief finds it and cuts the power, a backup battery keeps it sending its position for around 8 hours, and you get an alert the moment it is unplugged.
Our Anti-theft plan includes all three, fitted at your door. Alerts, live location and the cut-off button all live in the NavUp app, so you act from your phone in seconds. For the price for your car, ask for a free quote.
What should you do if your car is stolen?
Stay calm and follow these steps in order.
- Call the police on 197. Report the theft straight away. Give the make, model, colour and registration number.
- Open the app and check the live location. Note the time and place.
- Share the live location with the police. Our app lets you send a link they can follow street by street.
- Use the engine cut-off if the police advise it. It will only act below 20 km/h.
- File a formal report at the nearest police or National Guard station. You will need it for your insurer.
- Contact your insurer as soon as possible, with the report reference.
You can also message us on WhatsApp. We can help you use the app while you deal with the police.
Should you try to get the car back yourself?
No. Never. Even if you can see exactly where the car is, do not go there alone or with friends. You don’t know who you will find, and no car is worth getting hurt over. Give the location to the police and let them act. Your job is to keep the information flowing, not to chase anyone.
How quickly can a tracker be fitted?
A technician comes to your home or workplace and fits the tracker in about 45 minutes, without cutting original wiring. We cover all 24 governorates, usually the next day in Greater Tunis, Cap Bon, the Sahel and Sfax. See GPS installation for your area, check our FAQ, or ask for a quote.
